LILBURN, Ga. -- A Lilburn police officer responded to the Family Dollar Store on Lawrenceville Highway on Monday afternoon for a shoplifting taking place.
Around 1:30, according to Police Chief Bruce Hedley, the officer arrived and confronted the shoplifting suspect. A struggle started between the two when the suspected began to fight with the officer.
The officer pulled his Taser, but the suspect took the Taser away, and tried to use it on the officer.
At that time, the officer used his gun to shoot the suspect twice, in the chest and face.
Hedley said, "The preliminary investigation shows the officer was defending his own life and his decision to use deadly force was justified. The GBI will complete a thorough and exhaustive investigation and will return their findings as soon as possible."
The shooting left the suspect in critical condition. The officer was not hurt in the incident.
Hedley said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office are investigating the case.
