BROXTON, Ga. (AP) -- Officials with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation say a woman whose body was recovered after a house fire in Broxton was the victim of a homicide.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Spokesman John Bankhead says the charred remains authorities found Saturday have been identified as 49-year-old Edith Carole Sheffield. Although the woman's death has been ruled a homicide, authorities are not disclosing details on how Sheffield was killed.
Bankhead says firefighters responded to a blaze Friday evening that caused extensive damage to a two-story house on Bowens Mill Road. Bankhead says investigators found Sheffield's body in the debris Saturday night.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire and no arrests have been made.
Broxton is about 10 miles northwest of Douglas.
