SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -- There's fresh fallout from a drug trafficking scheme out of Sandy Springs.

An assistant solicitor for the city has lost her job due to "personal family problems," namely the fact that her husband has pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking charges.

Jeannine Malone had only been on the job since last month.

Investigators say her husband, Thomas Malone Jr., and Drew Green had been operating a massive synthetic drug cartel selling designer drugs, like synthetic marijuana and bath salts, to stores in dozens of states. A federal grand jury indicted them for drug trafficking, money laundering and conspiracy. The two eventually pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.

An 11Alive investigation uncovered that Green and Thomas Malone were also involved in a very unlikely side business for drug traffickers: they were running a rehab facility for recovering addicts in Sandy Springs.

As a result of our report, the Georgia Department of Community Health launched an investigation into that facility. Before our story, Health Department officials said the place wasn't on their radar. It wasn't licensed, inspected or regulated at all.

Now the rehab center has one week left to respond to a citation from the city of Sandy Springs before being shut down.
