ATLANTA -- One person was struck in an officer-involved shooting in Midtown Tuesday night.

Atlanta Police Officer John Chafee said the shooting happened at around 11 p.m. on West Peachtree Street near 17th Street.

An off-duty police officer who was working nearby heard gunshots and ran to the scene, where he saw a suspect firing into a group of people, Chafee said.

The officer confronted the suspect and began shooting. The suspect got into his car and drove away, according to Chafee.

About 30 minutes after the shooting, a man was dropped off at Grady Memorial Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Chafee said investigators believe the man was injured in the Midtown shooting, but could not say whether he was shot by the officer. The victim's name was not released.

The investigation continues. Chafee said the officer who fired the shots was placed on routine leave.
