ATLANTA -- Police say a 37-year-old man was shot twice early Tuesday at an apartment complex in northwest Atlanta.

The shooting happened at the Allen Temple Apartments on Allen Temple Court just after midnight.

Police Capt. Adam Lee III said the man stepped outside to smoke when two young men approached and asked for a cigarette. The victim, fearing he was about to be robbed, turned and walked away. That's when he was shot once in the side and once in the thigh. Lee said officers found seven shell casings at the scene.

Capt. Lee said the man did not recognize the men and the motive for the shooting is unclear.

The victim, whose name was not released, is in stable condition at Grady Hospital.
