AUSTELL, Ga. -- Three young girls were hit by a car while walking along a Douglas County road early Tuesday.

The girls, who are all about 14 years old, were struck at around 1:30 a.m. on Maxham Road near the Birch Landing apartment complex in Austell, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

A GSP spokesperson said the girls were walking in the far right lane of Maxham Road when they were hit by 22-year-old Crystal Marshall of Chicago.

One of the victims was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, one was taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston and one was treated at the scene, the GSP said. The girls' names were not released, but the GSP said one of them was in serious condition.

Marshall was taken to the Douglas County Jail and charged with DUI, serious injury by vehicle, driving too fast for conditions, slick tires and marijuana possession.

Maxham Road is closed between Old Alabama and Thornton roads as police investigate the accident. Drivers can take Veterans Memorial Highway as an alternate.
