  • LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- Students at Georgia Gwinnett College return to class Tuesday with a warning and description about a suspected rapist.

According to the alert sent out by campus police, sometime between 11:45 p.m. Sunday and 2:45 a.m. Monday, a young woman was approached in parking lot B near the residence halls. The victim said she was walking back to her car when she was attacked from behind. She was pushed into her car and sexually assaulted.

The suspect got away on foot. He has not been identified, but is described as a light-skinned black man with a muscular build and white shorts. Anyone with information is asked to call campus police at 678-407-5333. Anonymous tips can be made through Georgia Gwinnett College's website.

Another unrelated sexual assault was reported on campus earlier Sunday. That suspect was identified and taken to Gwinnett County Jail, according to college spokeswoman Jennifer Stephens. She said the suspect in that case was not a student.

"We have definitely heightened security," Stephens said. "Our housing staff is on heightened alert. We've increased patrols and also requested assistance from City of Lawrenceville Police, who are on stand by for us."

The college is encouraging students to aware of their surroundings, travel in groups, and use the campus escort system.

"Students can call our police department and request an escort from any point on campus to any other point on campus," Stephens said.

After recent growth, Georgia Gwinnett College has more than 9,000 students, about half of whom are freshman.
