Archie Byrd, III is wanted for trafficking underage girls
ATHENS, Ga. -- Archie Richard Byrd, III is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week for April 25, 2012. Byrd, 30, is wanted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Athens-Clarke County Police and California authorities.
The GBI wants him for human trafficking. Athens-Clarke County has an outstanding warrant for failure to appear, and Byrd has an outstanding warrant in California for Aggravated Assault.
The GBI said Byrd's trade is prostitution and he's a pimp. "As part of that trade, he is known to pimp underage girls," said the GBI's John Bankhead.
Byrd was being targeted by the GBI's Human Trafficking Squad, whose objective is to recover underage girls who are sold into prostitution.
Undercover agents posing as johns on websites and publications reach out to girls who are advertised. "They'll try to target photographs of girls that appear to be underage," Bankhead said.
They set up a meeting with some of them at a hotel in Athens on April 10. When the girls showed up, agents were able to recover a 17-year-old girl allegedly pimped by Byrd. "He got away from police that day on the 10th and Athens-Clarke County, and the GBI have been looking for him ever since," Bankhead said.
Byrd is the Fugitive of the Week on Rowson's Crime Scene and the GBI is asking anyone who knows where he is to call their tip line at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477).
"If the public knows where he is, don't approach him," Bankhead said. "He's considered to be armed and dangerous." Bankhead said Byrd is known to do business in the Athens area but he also has ties to East Point.
