CAPTURED: Arthur Dukes III
Arthur Dukes III is wanted for forgery and theft
UPDATE (April 3, 2012) -- Arthur Dukes III has been captured by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force.
Dukes was taken into custody Tuesday after U.S. Marshals learned he was working for an Atlanta landscaping company. "The business lead us to the job site Dukes was currently working at on Norwood Road where he was cutting grass," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze
Dukes is the seventh "Fugitive of the Week" arrested after airing on 11Alive News.
ATLANTA -- Arthur Dukes III is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week for March 28, 2012. Dukes, age 35, is wanted by the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force for altering, forging, or counterfeiting a vehicle title and theft by receiving stolen property.
Dukes is one of 96 people wanted in connection with an auto theft ring. Law enforcement officers from the Atlanta Police Department, U.S. Marshals, FBI, Fulton County Police Department, Fulton County Sheriff's Office and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office were part of the roundup called "Operation Heavy Metal".
Dukes has been able to elude arrest and has taunted Marshals who are trying to catch him. "He was made well aware of the nature of the charges and he actually contacted one of our investigators and said that he wasn't going to turn himself in, for us to come find him," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze.
The car theft ring he is alleged to be involved in literally plucks cars right off the street, over 300 of them in the last few years. They target cars older than 12 years because Georgia law allows a car to be sold for scrap without a title of ownership. When ring members sold the stolen cars to recyclers all they needed was a drivers license and a "Cancellation of Title", which were forged, according to police.
The Marshals said Dukes took the vehicles he stole to Intonu Recycling in south Fulton County. They said he got anywhere from $500 to $800 per car. "Arthur Dukes is one of the outstanding members of this auto theft ring that's still out there and he needs to answer for his charges," Heinze said.
