LITHONIA, Ga. -- Kenneth Darnell Smith, aka "Gucci", is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week for March 1, 2012.
Smith is wanted by DeKalb County Police for murder and by the U.S. Marshal's Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force for violating his supervised release.
Smith was convicted of drug charges in 1997 and served 10 years in federal prison. He was on supervised release when he was accused of murder in DeKalb.
"Smith does have a violent history and should be considered armed and dangerous," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Eric Heinze.
On April 28, 2009, Smith and 47-year-old Roderick Price of Jonesboro drove to a home in Lithonia to make a drug deal, according to Heinze. Price waited in a car while Smith went into the home on Wellington Circle.
"Once inside the residence, Kenneth Smith produced a firearm and began to fire on the individuals inside, striking two individuals," Heinze said.
One of those two, 32-year-old Lafayette Whirl of Tucker, was killed. Another man was seriously wounded.
Smith ran from the home and jumped into the waiting car with Price. "The incident took place in broad daylight in the middle of the workday, and there were actually witnesses from the neighborhood that called 911," Heinze said.
Because of a good vehicle description from those witnesses, DeKalb County Police were able to stop the getaway car. Unfortunately, Smith had already jumped out of the car and got away. Price, who was driving, was arrested.
Smith has been elusive since, and even though he has ties to Alabama, Heinze thinks he's still in the Atlanta area.
"Smith loves the Atlanta nightlife and hangs out in clubs in the downtown area," he said.
Now that he is 11Alive's Fugitive of the Week on Rowson's Crime Scene, the Marshals are hopeful his elusive run will end.
"If you've seen Mr. Smith getting gas or maybe at a particular nightclub or out getting something to eat, any information would be useful," Heinze said.
